Darling-Hammond has suggestions that would dramatically change education in the United States. After reading her book it has really opened my eyes to what is happening in our country, and what’s going on in other countries. Of the five key elements number fours starts the change. If we have teachers that are trained in 21st century techniques with similar mindset, then together we can push forward and make a difference. Continuing education for teachers is a must. Just looking at myself, my teaching will be forever changed. Had I not chosen this path, who knows how long this information would have taken to reach me. It’s only now that I am financially ready to take on more loans for furthering my education. With our county everything is always about money and for years our schools have been the ones who suffer. If we focus on equitable and adequate resources as well as strong support for teachers, then everything else would fall into place. Education in the US could potentially change in the near future.
John Dewey’s quote, “What the best and wisest parent wants for his own child, that must we want for all children in the community. Any other ideal for our schools is narrow and unlovely; acted upon, it destroys our democracy” still holds true 100 years later. I agree with John 100%. Every student deserves the best education no madder what their background is. As teachers we are the stepping-stones to a bright future that lies ahead.

What's the incentive for our government to change how we approach education if it's all about the money? We seem to be divided, as a country about whether the monetary investment we make in education is enough and whether education ought to even be a private money making venture.

If we are talking about making big changes in education then I think money plans a huge role. We all know that teaching is not a profession that you get rich doing. You go into teaching because you love children and you want them to succeed. Furthering a teacher's education is not required and taking on more loans or another loan is the last thing that young teachers want to do. If the financial burden was taken away I strongly feel that more teachers would take advantage to grow professionally. If our government paid for teacher's education and we were all being taught the same 21st century practices and techniques then we could start to see some major changes.

I agree with you. I gained so much from all of my readings in the Darling-Hammond book. As someone who got into Education later in life, It is interesting to me that because of the constantly changing standards and technology, I am not any farther behind than those who have been teaching for many years.

I am right there with you, Stephanie. I have come across information that makes me open my eyes to many things I did not realize before reading Darling- Hammond's book. I agree with the fact that it at starts with teachers who are trained in 21st century teaching and learning. We are the ones that can help open doors that many children and their parents don't even know exist for them. All of our students are owed access to the same education: the best education that is available to all students.

I too am very excited about the research I am reading to bring 21st century practices to my classroom. I am delighted to be your partner in this venture, as putting theory into practice can be very daunting without support. I am excited about our future at Markham with a supportive administration, good coaches and an innovative partner! Thank You.
