I used both qualitative and quantitative data analysis for my action research project. I chose to use both forms of analysis because I wanted to compare data using a pre and posttest design to gauge student growth, as well as to look at student’s engagement. When analyzing the results of their tests I saw growth in their test scores, but not significant growth. I now wonder, was it due to the pre and posttests being different or were the students distracted because the testing day fell on the last day of school before a vacation? These are all factors that could have influenced the results of this study.
Even though the overall study did not show significant growth I did notice that struggling students showed more growth than the other subgroups. 60 % of students who receive urgent reading intervention showed improvement in grade level text whereas the other subgroups only showed 33 % or 17% growth. For my qualitative data I created a three question self-assessment through Google forms. I was able to assign the assignment through my Google Classroom. I asked the following questions:

When setting up the questions for your qualitative assessment, did you have a place for students to enter in any other tool they use or were they only supposed to pick from the tools that you use in class? I would be curious if students come in with any other tool that you might not have used in the classroom.

Stephanie, I think your questioning of the results is justifiable. I also think the assessments being different and the post-test taken on the last day of school before vacation could have been the greatest reason why you saw those results. Yet, learning that the students who are struggling the most showed the most improvement, gives me hope. Who knows, maybe running the cycle of your research again without those limitations might give different results.

I love your research study. I believe that any insight that we might gain in making some of our kiddos more successful and excited about reading is a huge win. Thank you for all your hard work.
