Bob Pearlman's case study on 21 century learning is quite overwhelming. He has lots of links and videos showing what 21st learning should look like. As I watch some of the videos, I realized how far away I am from this style of teaching. Its more than just introducing students to typing, using a search engine, and basic computer skills. It is way beyond the basics of which I struggle to teach. When looking at the environment, it seems to be very engaging for students. It's not set up with traditional desks and books, but a larger room segregated by different stations. Students are working in small groups or finding their own quite work place within the room. Whole group teaching is only used to introduce a project and to clarify misconceptions that large numbers of students might have. Students seems to be working at their own pace, doing a lot of hands on projects, therefore having the drive to succeed and feel successful in their learning. I also noticed a few things that I am already doing in my classroom such as student collaboration, small group instruction, and one on one coaching. I have a long way to go, but lots of new things to try. |
